Washington is reportedly considering labeling UNRWA as a terrorist organization and imposing heavy sanctions on its staff.
Reuters reports that the US is examining unprecedented measures against UNRWA, including formally designating the agency as an FTO — the same category used for ISIS and al-Qaeda — and applying economic sanctions on both the organization and individual personnel.
According to the report, the administration declined to comment, stressing that no final decision has yet been made. Still, the fact that these steps are even under review reflects growing frustration in Washington over UNRWA’s long-documented ties to Hamas and its role in perpetuating the conflict rather than resolving it.
If enacted, this would mark the toughest US stance ever taken against the agency, dealing a significant blow to an organization that has long operated with broad international immunity. Such a move would also align with Israel’s long-standing claim that UNRWA functions as a political arm of Hamas in Gaza and undermines regional stability.
