UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has dialed back Defence Secretary Grant Shapps’s suggestion that UK troops could train forces in Ukraine.
Sunak’s U-turn comes after Shapps said a proposal under discussion would reduce the reliance on the UK and NATO members’ bases.
The UK Prime Minister said the plans of training Ukrainian soldiers on Ukrainian land were not for the “here and now”.
"I think there's been some misreporting about this," Sunak told broadcasters on his visit to Burnley.
Earlier, Shapps said he now sees an opportunity to bring more things to Ukraine, including weapons production.
Shapps added that the UK’s defense firm BAE was also moving to manufacturing in Ukraine.
Shapps had also disclosed that he had talked to Zelensky about how the navy could help defend commercial vessels from Russian attacks.
