A major earthquake struck northern Venezuela, sending residents fleeing into the streets of Caracas as buildings shook and damage was reported across the capital.
Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, with US monitors reporting a magnitude 7.1 quake near Montalbán, west of Caracas, followed by a stronger tremor minutes later. The shaking was felt strongly in the capital, where residents evacuated buildings and emergency crews began assessing damage.
Early reports said several structures were damaged or collapsed in Caracas, including in central neighborhoods. Officials warned residents to stay away from unstable buildings and prepare for aftershocks. A tsunami warning issued for parts of the Caribbean was later lifted, while rescue and damage assessments remain underway.
