Since the news at the end of the week that Qatar wants to close the office of the political bureau of Hamas, sources in the terrorist organization have claimed that it has alternatives. Since then, quite a few options have been thrown into the air, some of them less likely.
The "natural" option of Tehran or Sana'a certainly seems less likely for figures like Khaled Mashal and Musa Abu Marzouk who are not part of the "Iranian camp" in Hamas. Turkey is an option, but according to reports, the Turks are not enthusiastic, although they will agree to host the Hamas leadership as a temporary solution only.
In the past it was reported that Hamas was considering moving to Iraq, but this was denied by all parties. Moving beyond Beirut is also considered an option, although even in a cease-fire situation it does not seem that the leaders of Hamas will feel safe from elimination there.
So what's left? The "hot name" for the Hamas leadership at the moment is Algeria, which is closer to Russia than to the USA. Other possible options are Mauritania and the Sultanate of Oman. We will not be surprised if more names come up in the near future.
