Israel’s naval forces have been, for years, quietly operating one of the most advanced unmanned surface vessels in the world.
The Seagull, developed by Israel’s Elbit Systems, has been in service since 2017 and has repeatedly been referenced by defense sources as actively deployed in ongoing maritime operations. The system provides underwater intelligence, anti-submarine detection, mine countermeasures, and long-duration patrol missions without risking Israeli personnel.
The Seagull can be equipped with advanced sonar, electronic warfare suites, and even loitering munitions—a capability that dramatically expands Israel’s maritime reach in the Red Sea, Mediterranean, and Gulf theaters. Defense reporting confirms the Navy has used Seagull during recent operational activity, especially as Israel faces growing regional threats from hostile navies and terrorist-backed maritime platforms.
Although Israel does not reveal how many Seagull vessels are fielded, the platform is regarded as fully operational rather than experimental. The Israeli Navy continues to integrate upgraded sensors and autonomy to counter submarine infiltration and sea-laid explosives—threats that remain highly relevant as Iran-backed terror groups increase naval aggression.
