The US military’s Central Command (US Central Command) has launched an operation to transfer ISIS detainees from northeast Syria to Iraq.
As part of the mission, on January 21, approximately 150 ISIS fighters were moved from a detention facility in the al-Hasakah area to a secure facility inside Iraq, under US supervision.
According to assessments, up to around 7,000 ISIS detainees could ultimately be transferred as part of this operation. The move is intended to reduce pressure on detention sites in northeast Syria and place long-term responsibility for the detainees with Iraqi authorities, amid ongoing concerns over prison security and the potential for ISIS resurgence.
