The United Arab Emirates has decided to halt government scholarships for Emirati students studying at universities in United Kingdom, citing growing concerns over ideological exposure and potential radicalization linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.
According to regional sources, Emirati authorities believe that certain academic environments in Britain have become increasingly permissive toward Islamist political activism, including networks and narratives associated with the Muslim Brotherhood. UAE officials are reportedly worried that prolonged exposure to these ideas could influence students politically and religiously in ways that conflict with the country’s strict stance against Islamist movements.
The Muslim Brotherhood is officially designated as a terrorist organization by the UAE, which has long viewed the group as a threat to state stability, national identity, and regional security. Emirati policymakers argue that the organization exploits Western academic freedoms to spread its ideology, recruit sympathizers, and normalize political Islam under the cover of civil society and human rights discourse.
