Iraqi security forces arrested dozens of lawmakers and senior officials in a major operation inside Baghdad’s most sensitive government district, as the crackdown reportedly continues.
Iraqi security forces carried out a rare early-morning raid inside Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, arresting senior officials, politicians and members of parliament as part of a sweeping anti-corruption campaign.
The operation was reportedly carried out by elite Counter Terrorism Service units, along with other Iraqi security bodies. The Green Zone, which houses Iraq’s parliament, government offices and foreign embassies, was sealed off during the raids.
Iraqi state media reported that 47 suspects were arrested on corruption charges, including current lawmakers, former officials and at least one senior Oil Ministry figure. Some of the arrests are reportedly connected to testimony given by former Deputy Oil Minister Adnan al-Jumaili, who was detained last month.
