Ahead of a key Lebanese cabinet meeting to discuss the issue of Hezbollah's weapons, the terror group has reportedly issued a stark warning.
According to Saudi news channel Al Arabiya, Hezbollah has threatened “anarchy” if the government moves forward with a decision to disarm it. Sources close to Hezbollah say the group is preparing for “popular protests” and disruptions to public life in Lebanon in response to any such move.
While Hezbollah reportedly has no intention of engaging the Lebanese Army directly, the group’s response will depend on the nature and implementation of any disarmament decision. Meanwhile, a key Hezbollah ally, Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, reportedly supports a U.S.-backed proposal by envoy Tom Barak that would see Hezbollah disarmed in stages in exchange for incentives to Lebanon—especially to southern regions.
Hezbollah’s Al-Manar network also reports that the cabinet meeting may be postponed to Thursday to allow for further negotiations.
