US President Donald Trump issued unusually blunt remarks about Mexico following the US operation against Nicolás Maduro and narco-cartels in Venezuela, directly questioning Mexico’s sovereignty in the face of organized crime.
Referring to Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump said: “She’s a good woman, but the cartels run Mexico. She doesn’t control the country — the cartels do.”
The statement highlights Trump’s view that criminal organizations have effectively overtaken state authority in parts of Mexico, turning the country into a narco-dominated system rather than a fully sovereign state governed by elected leadership.
