Monumental milestone: Ethiopia completes Renaissance Dam despite Egyptian threats
Ethiopia has officially completed construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) — marking a historic achievement that reshapes Africa’s energy and development landscape.
GERD, built on the Blue Nile, is now the largest hydroelectric dam on the continent, with an impressive capacity of 5,000 megawatts. This output is expected to more than double Ethiopia’s electricity production, positioning the country as a rising energy power in Africa.
However, the dam’s completion has heightened tensions with Egypt and Sudan. Both countries fear the project will reduce Nile water flow — a critical resource for their populations and economies.
