An Iranian research institute revealed that the number of people living in extreme poverty in the country reached 25 million people.
A new study on poverty and inequality in Iran was presented by the institute's president, Rozba Kardoni, saying that 15% of the country's population lived under extreme poverty between 2013 and 2017. The figure doubled to about 30% between 2017 and 2020.
Extreme poverty was defined as a situation in which a person's or family's material resources do not meet their basic needs. These basic needs include food, drinking water, adequate housing conditions, basic education and basic health services. Almost 85 million people in Iran suffer from poverty and poor economic conditions.
