Israel’s reported presence in Somaliland could dramatically reshape the balance of power in the Red Sea and strengthen its ability to strike the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.
“We have much more significant leverage over the Houthis because we are no longer 2,000 kilometers away, but only 300 to 350 kilometers from them,” the report explained. “We can attack them repeatedly without the need for refueling aircraft.”
According to foreign reports, the Israeli Air Force is maintaining an operational presence in Somaliland, using UAE-funded infrastructure and underground aircraft hangars at Berbera.
The strategic triangle linking Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Somaliland would provide Israel with a forward foothold near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.
