The magazine reported that for the first time an increase in mutual air combat cases between Ukrainian and Russian drones was observed, just as occurred in the First World War when violent clashes took place in the air between the fighter planes.

Last October, a video went viral on social media showing a Ukrainian drone hitting and shooting down a Russian aircraft.

"This is the first documented case of a conflict between drones during wartime," the newspaper said.

Since then, Ukrainian forces have released additional videos of air battles between drones, and Russian drones are believed to have carried out similar strikes (against Ukrainian drones), although the available information on this is sparse.

Both Russia and Ukraine use drones extensively to gather intelligence, improve reconnaissance capabilities and direct artillery fire.

Russia has carried out repeated attacks on Ukraine's power grid, mainly using Shahed-136 drones that it purchased from Iran.

It is difficult to shoot down such aircraft using the traditional methods used to intercept missiles or damage fighter planes, for several reasons, among them the difficulty of locating them, and the high cost of Patriot missiles and other air defense systems, which reach a cost of one million dollars per missile.

The newspaper notes that the Ukrainians currently use small UAVs deployed over the country at heights outside the range of the Russian drones and equipped with cameras.
