Jerusalem, 4 May, 2023 (TPS) -- In what the government is calling “great news” for the residents of Israel, after years of delays, the Minister of Transportation and Road Safety Miri Regev is launching a project for the safety and transportation upgrade of Highway 65 from the Debrat Junction to the Golani Junction in the Galilee. The project will cost 1.1 billion Shekels ($$205 million).
The 18 km (101 miles) stretch has long been called a “bloody road” and accidents there over the years took a heavy toll in human life.
Although Route 65 is a major transportation artery in the northern region and serves dozens of towns, its northern section has remained just a one-lane road without a divider. It also has unregulated intersections and no crosswalks.
As a result, over the years, many accidents have occurred on the road, a large number of them fatal, as well as traffic congestion that has damaged the quality of life and freedom of movement of the residents of the north.
