In an interview with the AP news agency, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his displeasure at receiving an inactive air defense system from a European country.
The Ukrainian leader revealed that the air defense system he wanted to receive from a NATO country repeatedly broke down and "had to be changed again and again." However, he refused to reveal the name of the European country that provided the system.
Moreover, Zelensky admitted that Kiev has not yet been able to deploy US-made Patriot missiles.
The United States announced in December 2022 that Ukraine would soon receive Patriot air defense systems.
Since January, the United States has been training Ukrainian soldiers to operate the Patriot system effectively. Together with the United States, Germany and the Netherlands have pledged to supply Patriot systems to Ukraine.
Zelensky said that Ukraine needs at least 20 Patriot batteries to defend against possible missile attacks from Russia. However, he also admitted that this may not be enough, given that no other country has encountered "so many ballistic missiles".
The Ukrainian president also reiterated his long-standing appeal for modern fighter jets, stating that Ukraine lacks such advanced aircraft for military operations.
Despite the decision of Poland and Slovakia to supply Ukraine with Soviet-era fighter planes, Western countries are reluctant to supply modern-made fighter planes for fear of an escalation in the conflict.
The Ukrainian leader noted that Putin's latest statement about the transfer of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, near NATO territory, was a deliberate attempt to divert attention from Xi's visit, which did not yield positive results.
Zelensky stated that he does not believe that Putin is ready to use nuclear weapons despite his recent provocative actions.
