Peter Pilkington, 48, from Woodridge, died in hospital after he was shot by police during a six-hour siege at an NDIS service provider in the southern Brisbane suburb of Stretton.

Police allege Mr Pilkington raised a firearm at officers while five people were in an adjoining room.

Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the incident was under investigation by the Ethical Standards Command, with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Brisbane Islamic community spokesperson Ali Kadri said he met Mr Pilkington as a representative of Holland Park Mosque when he called for support and counselling after a period in prison – where Mr Pilkington had converted to Islam.

Mr Kadri, who described Mr Pilkington as an acquaintance, said he had previously warned police that Mr Pilkington might be dangerous.

He said after his release from prison, Mr Pilkington continued to suffer from drug addiction and homelessness.

“The guy was in utter desperation, I mean, somebody who’s suffering from mental health issues, drug abuse, and I think he carried a childhood trauma as well,” Mr Kadri said.

“I actually remember explicitly speaking to law enforcement agencies about my concern that something like this might happen in two years — and it did happen.

“He used to get frustrated and say really silly things sometimes. I mean, I remember a couple of years ago, he spoke to me that he might as well become a terrorist and blow up a mosque.

“He used to lash out and say silly things, but I don’t think he had access to weapons,” Mr Kadri said.

“He liked to sort of, you know, blackmail people into supporting him by saying outrageous things.”
