Comedy icon Jerry Seinfeld expressed his surprise and disappointment upon learning that the school his son attended permits students who feel “distressed” about the 2024 election to take the day off following Election Day.
Seinfeld had enrolled his son at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, a private pre-K–12 institution in New York City with an annual tuition of $65,540.
He is now concerned that the school’s approach is teaching children to succumb to the slightest social pressures.
According to the Daily Mail, the school’s principal recently sent a letter to parents outlining plans to establish a “safe space” for students anxious about the election. The letter acknowledged that the election could be a “high-stakes and emotional time” for children and promised to provide necessary support.
In addition, administrators directed teachers to refrain from assigning homework for the Wednesday following the election, allowing students time to decompress.
This announcement seems to have pushed Seinfeld over the edge, leading him to withdraw his son from the prestigious institution. “This is why the kids hated it. What kind of lives have these people led that makes them think this is the right way to handle young people?” Seinfeld remarked to the New York Times. He questioned, “To encourage them to buckle? This is the lesson they’re providing for exorbitant sums of money?”
The school has faced other controversies as well. In August, headmaster Joe Algrant resigned amid complaints from parents who felt the school had become a center for antisemitism. One parent reported that her Jewish son was labeled an “ethnic cleanser” and a “colonizer” at school. When he attempted to arrange for a Holocaust survivor to speak to his class, other students protested, citing their support for Palestinians.
Furthermore, in 2020, teacher J.B. Brager was dismissed for making derogatory remarks about Jews and Israel in the classroom. The previous year, the school hosted speaker Kayum Ahmed, who controversially compared Jews to Hitler’s Nazi regime, claiming they were perpetrating a Holocaust against Palestinians.
