Senior Hezbollah official Mahmoud Qomati has rejected President Donald Trump’s suggestion that positive contacts are taking place with Hezbollah, accusing the US president of “imagining things” and pretending to be victorious even when he has been defeated.
In a June 5 interview with Sonar Media Center, Qomati, deputy chairman of Hezbollah’s political council, questioned who had told Trump that Hezbollah or Iran’s Supreme Leader was willing to speak with him.
“Who told Trump that Hezbollah or Iran’s Supreme Leader are willing to speak with him?” Qomati asked, dismissing Trump’s remarks about a positive atmosphere surrounding initial contacts with Hezbollah officials.
Qomati also claimed that the United States views Lebanon’s president and prime minister as “their people.” He said political negotiations are often described as a combination of pressure and incentives, but argued that the Americans had offered Lebanon only pressure and no meaningful benefits.
