Killing two birds with one stone: The Trump administration's decision to return to "maximum pressure" on Iran is not only hurting it but also its neighbor Iraq.
As part of the return to the tough policy, President Trump on Tuesday revoked the exemption that Iraq had been granted for years to import Iranian natural gas.
For Iraq, this new ban is a severe blow, since the country's electricity grid relies on Iranian natural gas.
Following Trump's decision, Iraq needs to find immediate alternatives to Iranian gas. At this stage, it seems that the alternative will come in the form of gas from Turkmenistan.
The possibility of importing natural gas from Qatar is also being considered.
For Iraq, Trump's move is a severe blow, as 40%-60% of its electricity output is based on Iranian gas. Iraq will have to find quick solutions to the problem, otherwise the power outages in the summer will be long.
