Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, is gripped by growing fear as fighters from Al-Shabaab, al-Qaeda’s East African branch, advance to within 40 kilometers of the city.
Since February, the group has captured dozens of towns and villages in the surrounding region, mounting its largest ground offensive in years.
According to The Telegraph, Al-Shabaab is attempting to soften its image through a “hearts” campaign in areas under its control, presenting itself as an alternative to government corruption.
The group promises to enforce Sharia law and guarantee justice and order, in a scenario reminiscent of Kabul’s fall to the Taliban in 2021.
