Intercepted phone conversations of former senior Syrian army officers reveal open gloating over the severe blows Hamas is absorbing from Israel in Gaza, alongside attempts to seek Israeli backing for destabilizing moves inside Syria.
According to a report aired Wednesday evening by Al Jazeera, leaked recordings and documents show that officers tied to the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad praised Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and explored ways to exploit it for their own interests.
Al Jazeera said the materials were obtained after an individual hacked the phones of a group of Assad-era officers, deceiving them into believing he was an operative of Israeli foreign intelligence. This ruse reportedly granted access to sensitive conversations, including recordings related to military plans and troop movements.
The trove includes more than 74 hours of audio and over 600 documents, exposing efforts by remnants of the former regime to reorganize and coordinate roles among senior military and security officials who once held key command positions under Assad.
