US President Donald Trump has nominated Dan Caine to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a surprise choice for the retired three-star general, dating back to their first meeting together in Iraq in 2018.

Trump said during a speech at the 2019 Conservative Political Action Conference that Caine, then deputy commander of the Special Operations Command fighting the Islamic State, told him the militant group could be eliminated in just one week.

Since then, Trump has told the story of his meeting with Caine several times and has been full of praise for him.

Trump has an ability to recognize leadership in people that others do not have. His first term was marred by recommendations from politicians who had their own agenda. This time it’s different🇺🇸🇮🇱
