US defense industry shifts toward wartime footing amid global tensions

The US is reportedly taking early steps to expand its military production capacity, as rising global tensions and ongoing conflicts strain existing weapons stockpiles.

According to reports, the Pentagon has begun discussions with major American automakers, including General Motors and Ford, to explore whether they could help produce military equipment. While still in the early stages, these talks reflect a broader push to rapidly scale up production capabilities in response to growing strategic demands.

The need for increased output comes as the US continues to support Ukraine in its war against Russia while also conducting military operations linked to Iran. These overlapping commitments have reportedly led to shortages in certain critical weapons systems.

Concerns are especially focused on air defense systems like THAAD and Patriot, as well as the heavy use of Tomahawk missiles, which now require urgent replenishment. Maintaining strong stockpiles is seen as essential to deterrence, particularly in light of concerns that perceived weakness could embolden China in regions like Taiwan.
