Syrian reports published Monday claimed that several members of the Syrian military loyal to President Ahmed al-Sharaa were killed in fighting against Druze forces in southern Syria.
According to the reports, the Druze fighters were aligned with Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, one of the most prominent Druze religious leaders in Syria and a leading opponent of the authorities in Damascus. Footage circulating from Syria reportedly showed the soldiers who were killed during the battle.
The circumstances of the clash, the precise location and the number of casualties have not yet been independently confirmed. However, the reported confrontation highlights the continuing instability in southern Syria and the deep opposition among parts of the Druze community to al-Sharaa’s government.
