Dmitry Polyansky, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, has accused Washington of giving Israel an explicit mandate to attack Damascus International Airport.

"We have the impression that Israel has received approval to carry out illegal unilateral actions in the region with the tacit consent of Washington," Polyansky said during a Security Council meeting on Monday.

Polyansky believes that the bombing of the airport prevents any chance of reviving the peace process, and that the Israeli attack has led to the destruction of the runway.

Earlier, the Israeli Air Force bombed Damascus International Airport, three days after a similar attack by an Iranian weapons development plant in its vicinity.
