In North Africa, the economic struggle between Morocco and neighboring Algeria escalates following the announcement of the severance of diplomatic relations several weeks ago. On Thursday, Algeria announced that it was closing its airspace to Moroccan civilian and military aircraft. The move is intended to inflict economic damage on Morocco and the logic is simple: closing the crossing will force Moroccan planes to use Mediterranean skies - flights will be extended and so will the costs whether it is passengers or goods.
Morocco is trying to reduce the importance of the economic damage that the new Algerian sanction will cause and claims that the airline Royal Moroccan uses its neighbor's airspace on only 15 weekly flights.
I am not a big expert in aviation but I think direct flights from Morocco to Israel by Royal Moroccan are supposed to pass through Algerian airspace. This makes them more attractive in terms of flight time compared to EL AL flights, for example, which are not allowed to enter Algeria's airspace and other countries in the North African region.
