The House approved a sweeping election integrity bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections, with nearly all Democrats opposing the measure.
The US House of Representatives passed Rep. Chip Roy’s SAVE America Act on Wednesday by a vote of 218–213. The legislation would require voter ID and documentary proof of US citizenship for participation in federal elections, potentially as early as this coming November.
All but one House Democrat — Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas — voted against the bill. Cuellar was the sole Democrat to support the measure.
The legislation is an updated version of the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, previously introduced by Roy. An earlier version passed the House in April 2025 but was not taken up by the Senate.
