CNN political commentator Shermichael Singleton accused Democrats of abandoning their proclaimed moral standards by supporting Graham Platner, the party’s newly elected Senate nominee in Maine.
Platner won Tuesday’s Democratic primary despite allegations involving his past treatment of women, offensive online remarks and a tattoo resembling a symbol used by Nazi Germany’s SS. Platner has denied allegations of physical abuse, apologized for other conduct and presented his candidacy as a story of personal change.
Singleton argued that Democrats spent years portraying their opposition to President Donald Trump and Republicans as a defense of morality, justice and women. Their willingness to overlook the controversies surrounding Platner, he said, shows those principles apply only when politically convenient.
He accused the party of accepting Platner because defeating Republican Senator Susan Collins could help Democrats regain control of the Senate.
