Gunmen ambushed an Iranian police patrol in the Daman area of Iranshahr, Sistan-Baluchistan province, killing at least five security personnel. Some local reports suggest the death toll may be closer to 10 and claim that two patrol vehicles were targeted in the attack.
The assault is being attributed to the Baluchi insurgent group Jaish al-Adl, which has carried out similar strikes in the past. However, as of now, no group has officially claimed responsibility. The attack highlights ongoing instability in the restive southeastern province, long a hotspot of anti-regime militancy.
BACKGROUND:
Jaish al-Adl (“Army of Justice”) is a Sunni Baluchi insurgent group based in Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan province. Formed in 2012 after the decline of Jundallah, the group claims to fight for greater rights for Iran’s Baluchi Sunni minority, who face systemic discrimination by the Shi’ite-led regime in Tehran.
