Lebanese opponents of Hezbollah say the US-Iran memorandum has strengthened Tehran’s proxy and embarrassed the leaders trying to weaken it.
Kan TV reports that the camp in Lebanon that opposes Hezbollah is deeply disappointed with President Donald Trump over the US-Iran understandings reached in Switzerland, after the memorandum tied the Lebanese front to Washington’s negotiations with Tehran.
While Hezbollah’s camp is celebrating the memorandum, which included a halt to fighting on the Lebanese front and restored Iranian influence in Lebanon through the front door, Hezbollah’s opponents see the exact opposite picture. A Lebanese politician from one of the anti-Hezbollah parties told Kan News that the move strengthens Hezbollah’s camp and weakens those pushing for its disarmament.
According to the politician, the memorandum also embarrassed President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who have been pushing for continued direct dialogue with Israel and for weakening Hezbollah’s armed grip on the country.
