Syria is not without economic troubles these days after the Assad regime left a "scorched earth" and the international community is in no hurry to lift sanctions on the new government of Al-Julani.
Now it turns out there is a new trouble. Syria has begun to be flooded with counterfeit dollars.
According to reports, the counterfeits, mainly in 100 dollar bills, are of high quality. They are sold in "shacks" on the sides of the roads or in Telegram groups. The high prevalence of counterfeit dollars means that business owners and money changers are avoiding trading in these bills.
It is unclear who is behind the counterfeit dollars, but sources in Syria estimate that they originate from gangs operating in Turkey. It should be noted that during the Assad regime, there was a 7-year prison sentence for those who distribute counterfeit dollars. Al-Julani's regime did not address the issue of counterfeit dollars at this stage.
