Far-Left? Terror-linked? Or Iraq war hero? Maybe all three!
Adam Hamawy, a Democrat running to replace retiring Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman in New Jersey, has won his party’s primary despite controversy over his past volunteer work with the Benevolence International Foundation, a group later described by the 9/11 Commission as part of a network that covertly supported terrorist activities linked to Osama bin Laden.
Hamawy, an Iraq War veteran and surgeon, has also been praised in the past for helping save Sen. Tammy Duckworth’s life after a helicopter crash. But during the campaign, his record came under renewed scrutiny because of his 1994 internship with the Benevolence International Foundation in Bosnia, as well as reported associations connected to the “Blind Sheikh.”
The victory is politically significant because Hamawy was endorsed by members of the far-left “Squad” and has been sharply critical of Israel. For pro-Israel voters, his rise is another warning sign about the direction of parts of the Democratic Party, where anti-Israel voices continue gaining influence even when serious questions surround their records and associations.
