Rep. Ilhan Omar dismissed a new GOP proposal that would bar foreign-born Americans from serving in Congress, federal courts, or Senate-confirmed government positions.
Asked about the proposed constitutional amendment by Rep. Nancy Mace, Omar responded simply: “Good luck to her.”
Mace’s proposal would create the same “natural-born citizen” requirement already used for the presidency and vice presidency. She specifically named Omar, Shri Thanedar, and Pramila Jayapal — all foreign-born Democratic lawmakers — and accused them of showing that their “loyalty is not to America.”
Omar, who was born in Somalia and became a naturalized US citizen in 2000, said she is not worried the proposal will succeed. And she may be right: changing the US Constitution requires approval from two-thirds of both the House and Senate, followed by ratification from three-fourths of the states.
