Minnesota Republicans failed Tuesday to subpoena Rep. Ilhan Omar for testimony and documents related to the state’s massive fraud scandal.
The subpoena needed six votes in the House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee but received only five, despite the Republican majority.
Committee Chair State Rep. Kristin Robbins said Omar had ignored repeated requests to testify and provide records. Robbins said the committee wants answers about Omar’s role in passing the MEALS Act in March 2020, which Republicans argue weakened safeguards in the federal school nutrition program and helped create conditions for fraud.
Robbins also said Omar failed to appear at a previous hearing focused on the MEALS Act. The committee had requested emails, texts and meeting records showing how Omar promoted expanded access to federal child nutrition programs, including her contacts with Minnesota education officials and constituents.
