Should you be able to create voting districts that favor a particular race? The average person would assume that you could not, but one of the pernicious abuses of the Voting Rights Act led to the creation of these districts (I’ve lived in some of them) that exist by design to create a black majority (or other races) and then to, presumably, elect black politicians who will always be Democrats.

This form of VRA gerrymandering maintained a system of racial congressional allotments that were inherently a violation of everything that desegregation was supposed to represent. This unconstitutional system was crucial for Democrat House majorities.

The Supreme Court’s decision written by Justice Alito didn’t outright end the practice, and, presumably for the sake of compromise, hedged quite a bit, but did state that in Louisiana, a majority black district couldn’t simply be brought into being without proving that discrimination existed.
