Yasser Borhamy argued that while armed jihad against Israel may be considered obligatory, Egypt should not engage in war without the capability to win, advising patience and preparation until the balance of power shifts in its favor.
In his weekly lecture, Egyptian Salafi leader Yasser Borhamy, responded to a question about the fatwa by Ali Al-Qaradaghi Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, according to which armed Jihad against Israel is obligatory for all Muslims in an April 5, 2025 video posted on his Facebook page.
He stated that the people of Gaza should have consulted with Muslim countries before initiating the war. Borhamy explained that if Egypt were to go to war with Israel, it would need to annul the Camp David Accords and confront the U.S. and other Western countries.
However, he advised Egypt to take a lesson from Turkey, which only acted in Syria when it knew it had the power to do so.
Borhamy acknowledged that Egypt currently lacks the capability to resist Israel, the U.S., and Western nations, but he emphasized that the balance of power could shift according to Allah’s will.
He further stated that Allah does not require Egyptians to do more than they are capable of, urging them to wait patiently, increase in their faith, and prepare for when the balance of power changes, allowing them to confront these countries.
