Father of soldier killed by terrorists runs for Georgia senate
David Lubin says prompted to compete in Democratic primaries after senator representing substantial Jewish population abstains in vote for bill combating antisemitism

David Lubin, the father of slain Sgt. Rose Ida Lubin, killed in a terror attack in November said he would compete in the Democratic primaries for a seat in the Georgia Senate.

Lubin said he was prompted to challenge Democratic Sen. Sally Harrell after she abstained from voting on a measure aimed at combating antisemitism. The measure was ultimately signed into law in January, by Gov. Brian Kemp after both chambers passed it with overwhelming bipartisan support.
“She showed who she was that day by not voting for the bill," Lubin said of Harrell. "She’s not representing her constituents,” Lubin told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"It’s hard to go to bed at night and think that our senator didn’t support tougher hate crime laws.”
Harrell was elected in 2018 in a district of Atlanta that has a substantial Jewish population.
“When Rose died, I woke up and said that I have to learn from my daughter. She was never afraid to take risks. I know I have to take risks and I have to serve, like she did,” he said. “I can’t sit idly by anymore,” he said even though he concedes he has little chance of winning.
After his daughter's death Lubin, who is a construction executive and a father of four was prominent in his push to pass the bill that defines antisemitism as a hate crime. He said he had personally urged Harrell to support the measure when she invited him and his family to the state house after his daughter was killed.
Rose was a lone soldier, a term given to young men and women who immigrate to Israel without family and join the ranks of the IDF. After she arrived in 2021, and after learning Hebrew in a Jewish Agency Ulpan – a Hebrew Language course, she enlisted in the IDF and was deployed with the Border Police.
She took up residence in a Kibbutz near the Gaza border, and was, as is the practice in the Kibbutz movement, 'adopted' into a family there. They fulfilled the role that family fills, providing a home to come to for food, warmth and whatever practical needs must be met.
On October 7, as Hamas terrorists were conducting their massacre in communities on the border, Lubin, a trained officer in the Border Police, grabbed her weapon and joined others defending their community from attack. She then rushed to assist neighboring communities, removing the injured to safety and fighting the terrorist onslaught.
Two days later, her Jerusalem-based unit was sent to where the fighting was still ongoing, to bring her back to bolster the defense against terror attacks in Jerusalem.
It was there that she was killed on Monday in a stabbing attack.
