French President Emmanuel Macron said that Israeli plans for annexation — whether “partial or total” or “de facto” through settlement activity in the occupied West Bank — constitute a “red line.”
Macron warned that France and its European partners would react “with force” if such projects are implemented. He made the remarks after meeting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas at the Élysée, where the two discussed next steps for implementing the ceasefire and steps toward political reform.
During the same meeting, the French presidency said both leaders agreed to create a joint committee to draft a constitution for a Palestinian state and discussed holding presidential and parliamentary elections once the ceasefire’s second phase — which includes the disarmament of Hamas — is under way.
The Élysée described the talks as part of France’s ongoing recognition of the State of Palestine and its push for a durable peace and security plan for the region.
