In a historic win, the Islamic Action Front, the political face of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan, made unprecedented gains in the country’s parliamentary elections.
Securing 32 seats in total—18 in the general elections and 14 in local elections—the IAF has achieved its most significant victory in history.
The Jordanian parliament has little practical power, as laws passed by the legislature require King Abdullah’s approval to take effect, while matters of foreign policy, security, and key government appointments remain under the domain of the monarchy. But the vote signals popular support for the IAF. Over 460,000 Jordanians — about 40% of the voters — cast their votes for the party.
“The election results reflect the current mood in Jordan,” a local journalist told The Press Service of Israel. , highlighting that the IAF found success not only in the capital, Amman, but also among traditionally conservative groups such as the Bedouin tribes in the south, as well as voters in Aqaba and Zarqa.
