AMIT SEGEL -- It’s Sunday, July 6, and Palestinian sheikhs in Hebron have proposed leaving the Palestinian Authority and joining the Abraham Accords—including Sheikh Wadee’ al-Jaabari, head of Hebron’s most powerful clan. That’s according to a scoop by the Wall Street Journal’s Elliot Kaufman and Yonah Jeremy Bob.
What do you need to know about the proposal?
In a letter to Israeli Economy Minister Nir Barkat, five leading Hebron sheikhs wrote: “The Emirate of Hebron shall recognize the State of Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people… and the State of Israel shall recognize the Emirate of Hebron as the Representative of the Arab residents in the Hebron District.”
The letter, which is backed by another 16 sheikhs, asks for a timetable for negotiations to join the Abraham Accords, alongside “a fair and decent arrangement that would replace the Oslo Accords, which only brought damage, death, economic disaster and destruction.”
