Breaking waves: Special report on IDF's Sea Commandos - Part 3

Weapons of war that have never been seen before and the first documentation of the operational activity of the naval commando: the photographer Ziv Koren started accompanying the fighters of the 13th Fleet when Israel celebrated 74, and for a whole year he saw them take over ships in the middle of the sea, operate secretly in enemy territory and arrest those who plan the next attack

Rescue under fire

The squadron's fighters practice parachuting from an airplane and hanging from a helicopter for combat in built-up terrain. If necessary, the fighters are prepared to rescue hostages in a creative and quick way, and above all, one that will effectively end even a complex kidnapping incident.

The fleet uses a variety of vessels that expand the range of capabilities and operations of the fighters in an underwater environment. For reasons of military censorship and information security, the tool was not documented from the outside, and its name is also still prohibited from publication.

Peak competency

The naval commando fighters go through strict and challenging screenings, and a training course of over a year and a half that is considered one of the most difficult in the IDF and includes the training of fighters in the Golani Brigade, the training of a unit in the 13th Fleet and dedicated training for commando fighters that focuses on the worlds of diving, operating vessels and combating terrorism at sea, but also in activities in built-up areas in Yosh and Gaza. Among the 8,000 candidates who come to the screening in each recruitment cycle, only 35 trainees will complete training. The length of the soldier's service track in the unit is six years.
